Benefits to negotiate into your employment contract

There's nothing more satisfying than receiving an offer of employment. You put a lot of work into the job-search process, so you should be proud of yourself.

Before you sign an employment contract, read through it several times. While doing so, make note of any details you'd like to negotiate into the contract.

In addition to salary, here are five other benefits that deserve your attention:

  • Paid time off: It doesn't always seem like a big deal upfront, but work-life balance perks are an absolute must. If you're not comfortable with the number of days initially offered, ask for more.
  • Remote work: Depending on your position, you may be able to ask for the ability to work from home part-time or full-time. This is another work-life balance perk that can help you excel in your new position.
  • Financial assistance obtaining an advanced degree: If you're interested in going back to school, such as to get your MBA, it's nice to have this benefit available to you.
  • Moving costs: This comes into play if you're moving to take the job. Relocation costs are standard with some companies, but don't expect this to be the case. It's something you'll want to work into your employment contract, if not already there.
  • Health and wellness: For example, ask your new employer to cover the cost of your gym membership. Not only does this benefit you, but by staying healthier the company wins as well.

If you require any help negotiating your employment contract, don't hesitate to seek the assistance of a legal professional. This is one of the better ways to understand the terms and conditions of the contract, including any that aren't beneficial to you.
